This house-museum is not only an exceptionally rich historical treasure but also a portal into the life and times of the greatest Slovenian poet, France Prešeren. Upon entering through the doors, you will feel the silent whispers of stories from the chamber, house, corridor, and black kitchen, unveiling the spirit of Prešeren himself and providing an unforgettable insight into his remarkable legacy. A visit to Prešeren’s birth house is not just educational; it’s an incredibly immersive experience, like a journey through time that remains in the memory and heart of every visitor forever. The feeling is truly magical when you realize you are walking through the same spaces where France Prešeren once strolled.
Prešeren’s birth house is one of the oldest houses in village Vrba, with its original structure dating back to the 16th century. Its present form emerged after the fire in 1856, which destroyed the economic building, thatched roof, and wooden structure. During the reconstruction, they elevated the homestead and added a “štibeljc” – an attic bedroom. Older architectural elements from the 16th century, like the stone portal in the cellar, and elements from the late Baroque period are still partially preserved. The prevailing architectural features align with those found in other homesteads in Vrba and its surroundings during the 19th century.
In 2011, this house-museum was declared a monument of national importance, emphasizing its invaluable contribution to Slovenian history. It’s worth mentioning that it is the first house of a famous personality in Slovenia that was transformed into a museum. Prešeren’s birth house is also the most visited museum of its kind in Slovenia.
