The villages below Mt. Stol have been the scene of many stories about bravery, love, war, loss and hope during the First World War. One of the stories left its mark in the form of a scratch on a young partisan’s helmet, and the other has been engraved in an inactive wrist watch.

Anže Mrak owns a private museum collection of items from the First World War, many of them from famous Isonzo Front (Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms is partly set in the events along this front), and which tell many stories. The military museum is opened by prior arrangement.

Life in the villages below Stol mountain was once inseparably linked with the land people depended on. Life took place in simple farm houses, on fertile fields, orchards, stables and in the summer high in the mountains where part of the family moved to in order to take care of the cattle.

If you would like to see the items, accessories and tools that made the life of simple people easier on a daily basis, visit the Museum of the past in the village of Zabreznica. Marjan Nadižar, the owner of the museum, will be more than happy to show you around. The museum is open by prior arrangement.
